|

At this very moment somewhere in the world various individuals are performing their outdoor construction chores on an ATV. Still others are driving their ATVs through many crazy and impossible to imagine race course. There are also other people who are pushing their ATVs to the very limits to find out what the boundaries of performance that these all terrain vehicles will go to. You will also find that there are people who are also buying used four wheelers.

Now you may ask why anyone would would buy a used four wheeler instead of a brand new ATV. The reasons are many but the main consideration that must be remembered when you are buying a used four wheeler is that you will need to inspect the condition of this vehicle before you buy it.

Remember that unlike brand new fresh from the dealers ATVs that have guarantees if any problems develop these used four wheelers don't have any such guarantees. Therefore you should inspect your possible new purchase very carefully and buy only the ones that are in good condition.

You can also find out what the handling condition of these used four wheelers is if you have the option of going for a short test drive. Remember that when you drive a used four wheeler that you will need a while to get used to the handling conditions as the vehicle may have been used for off road purposes.

The best way to find great deals on used four wheelers is to trawl through the various classifieds both in the traditional form and the online version. When you find possible choices then you should make a note of where you will be able to locate this promising find after your hunt has finished.

Armed with this information you can start asking various questions that will let you know if you are headed for ATV disaster or if you will have a match made in heaven. Once you have gotten all of the information that you require then you should find out what the final price of the used four wheelers are. This way you can decide if you want to buy that four wheeler or not.

Remember that it is a used four wheeler jungle out there. You will need to be able to see the great used four wheelers from the lame ATVs. Sort through the impossibly expensive used four wheelers to the affordable used four wheelers. Hopefully by the end of the day you should be close to owning your very own slightly used but still new four wheeler.

Yamaha Raptor 250 - The ATV For Adult Beginners

|

The Yamaha Raptor 250 is the perfect beginner ATV quad for teens through adults. The Raptor 250 is smaller than its bigger siblings (Raptor 350, Raptor 660, and Raptor 700R), but allows ample room for a larger rider. The Raptor 250 has a single piston 249cc 4-stroke engine that was originally used on the Yamaha Ripper, but has been modified for ATV off-road use. It has a broad powerband which is beneficial to any beginner ATV rider. This engine packs more than enough power for any beginning rider and enough oomph to be enjoyed by experienced riders that tend to favor bigger models.

The Yamaha Raptor 250 is a quad that you can grow with. Don't think that because this is your "beginner bike" you'll quickly get bored with it once you become a more experienced rider. There are plenty of aftermarket manufacturers of ATV performance parts such as carburetor jet kits, exhaust systems, wheels and tires, and more. All these items will let your Raptor 250 run with the "big boys" and it's definitely a quad that you'll keep for years.

Consumer's Digest named the Yamaha Raptor 250 a "Best Buy" in the Sport ATV category and ATV Sport magazine named it the "Best Of Class" for 2008. With those votes of confidence and Yamaha's history in the sport ATV market, you can be assured that the Raptor 250 is a reputable ATV that has lots to offer. Yamaha didn't cut corners when producing this ATV. It has the power and performance capabilities of ATVs priced twice as much as the Raptor 250 all packaged into a lightweight, economical, fun-out-of-the-box ATV that will give beginners and veterans years of enjoyment.

Mini Motos Guide

|

If you think the idea of racing around on a miniature motorcycle inches from the ground sounds like fun... you'd be right. Mini motos are the latest motorcycle craze, and if you've ever seen grown adults on pocket-sized motorbikes and wondered what it was all about, or want to know more, this guide is for you.

What is a mini moto?

Mini motos are small petrol-powered motorcycles, usually 39cc or 49cc. However, they are sometimes larger, up to 110cc.

Where can mini motos be ridden?

These bikes are intended for use on private land or racetracks, rather than road use. If you want to ride a mini moto you need to find a race track or get permission to use private land.

Fields are often unsuitable as mini motos have very low ground clearance and no suspension. If you want to ride on rough terrain then your best bet would be a mini dirt bike, which is made for off-road conditions.

What kind of mini motos are available?

There are several kinds of mini moto that can be bought from specialist outlets. If you are looking to buy a mini moto then there are several factors which need to be considered.

Firstly, you need to decide what you want it for. If you are planning on racing, then you will need a race-certified mini moto, such as a Blata or Polini. These can be raced in competitions as they adhere to regulations set by mini moto racing organisations.

If you are looking to ride your minimoto around private grounds just for fun, then you might not want to spend so much money. In that case, you could look for one of the many good value imports from China.

However, if you are inexperienced on two wheels, you might want to consider a mini ATV. These are great for beginners as they have the same engine as most minimotos but they use four wheels instead of two.

If you think you're too big for a Mini moto then you could try a midi moto - these are ideal for people with longer legs. The downside is they aren't as quick as mini motos due to the extra weight but they are available with a full electronics pack including electric start and lights, etc, and can be just as much fun.

Once you have made your choice, shop around to find the best deal. Some companies will sell the minimoto with extras such as helmets, or performance upgrades so it is always best to search far and wide for the best deal.

Make sure that you have the correct equipment to ride, including all the protective equipment, and then you're good to go!

ATV Tires

|

The tires of the ATV are among the most important parts. Basically, all-terrain tires are made for proper performance for both on- and off-road purposes. This is accomplished by using a tread pattern design where the lugs are tighter together than a mud tire's tread. They perform well on a variety of terrains, like rocks, sand and mud, while still offering decent traction on a paved road.

Depending on the tires, one can use the ATV for various purposes. Since the ATV is designed for off-road use, such as on sand, gravel, mud or snow, much depends on the type of tires one uses in an ATV.

When first launched in 1981, the ATVs had balloon tires. Today, a general ATV tire is heavy, with deep treads and a low pressure (less than 10 pounds per square inch [PSI]). This helps the tires get a better grip on the road, and therefore helps in navigating terrain like forests and wetlands.

A tire is made out of belts, a carcass and the inner lining. The belts are a series of rubber-coated layers of steel, polyester, nylon or Kevlar. The carcass is the main body of the tire, which is made out of wire beads and body plies. The inner liner is a special layer of compounded rubber, forming the inside of a tubeless tire.

There are two basic types of tire construction: bias-ply and radial designs. Bias-ply tires are made of textile cords, like nylon and sometimes Kevlar. Radial tires are made of rubber-coated reinforced-steel cable belts.

Each type of tire construction has its own unique set of characteristics, which play a part in its performance.

Sipes are the slots cut into the surface of the tire tread. The number of sipes and the way they are set in the tires is an important factor in the traction the tires get on muddy, snowy, wet or icy surfaces.

It is very important to be able to read the specs of a tire before buying it. The basic factors important while buying tires are tire type, tire width and aspect ratio of the height to the weight to the tire. Also, one should find out about the construction, wheel diameter, load index and speed rating of the tire.

The tires of an ATV are also the main culprit for the various criticisms against ATVs today. Along with taking a good grip on the path, the ATVs also dig channels that drain out boggy areas of water in forests, tear out fragile plants that are vital for the integrity of the sand dunes in deserts and beaches, and also destroy well-maintained snow trails in snow.

BB Gun Safety Tips

|

BB gun safety is extremely important. You have probably been told more than once that BB guns are not toys. And yet, many people still treat them as such. Has no one seen the ill-fated scene in the movie “A Christmas Story” when Ralphie fails to heed the warning of “You’ll shoot your eye out?”

Does no one remember that he did, indeed, practically shoot his eye out with his Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle? Of course, if he had followed basic BB gun safety rules, he would have been fine. Had he been wearing protective eyewear, instead of just his glasses, he would have been much better off. Had he not shot at a surface with such potential for ricochet… well, you get the point.

Anyhow, movies aside, BB gun safety truly is extremely important. Many people do not realize how easy it is to injure someone (or even potentially kill someone) with a BB gun. The same gun safety rules must be followed when using BB guns as when using any other type of gun.

This is especially important if you are training your child on a BB gun before you allow he or she to shoot a real gun. Make sure they learn BB gun safety, and subsequently basic gun safety, right off the bat.

Here are some of the most important BB gun safety rules:

· Treat all guns as though they are loaded. Never assume that a gun is not loaded.

· Never point your BB gun at anyone. It does not matter if it is not loaded!

· Check out both local and federal laws and regulations. Different states have different BB gun safety laws and rules. Certain guns are not allowed in certain places.

· Do not fire at a target unless you know everything surrounding the target. Do not shoot if there is a potential that someone is behind or on the sides of the target… you might miss!

· Keep your finger off of the trigger until you are ready to fire.

· As stated above, in the “A Christmas Story” incident, always where protective eyewear. Also wear a protective mask.

· Realize that BBs can ricochet. Be aware of the type of surface you are shooting at. BBs ricochet more easily off of certain surfaces. Flat surfaces, hard surfaces, and the water all surfaces that BBs may ricochet off of. Also make sure that the target is not at an angle.

· Start out shooting at a shooting range. It is a good and much safer place to learn how to shoot.

· Do not allow minors (persons under 18 years of age) to shoot any type of gun (not even a BB gun) with out active adult supervision.

· Now that BB guns are made to look more and more realistic, some people can mistake them for real guns. This makes them potentially dangerous! If someone (including and especially a policeman) thinks you have a real gun, he or she may act differently around you. You could be putting yourself and others in danger. Do not carry your BB gun in a public place. Doing so may actually be illegal in your state.

· Do not alter the color of your BB gun. If it has a fluorescent orange tip, that is for a reason! Policeman have been known to shoot and fire upon children who have removed the safety orange color form their guns, because the policemen could no longer recognize the guns as anything but real guns.

· It is not recommended that children under the age of 16 are allowed to operate a high velocity BB gun. Take a look at the velocity type of your BB gun or air rifle before using. The warning will likely say, “May be dangerous up to 350 yards,” as well as other warnings. Be sure to follow all warnings.

· Always check to make sure the gun is not loaded. Point the gun away from people and animals and squeeze the trigger (again, avoid pointing it at things that it might ricochet off of.

· Do not carry a loaded BB gun when climbing over fences or up trees or even when jumping. Doing so could cause the gun to go off.

· Keep care of your gun. A damaged or dirty gun is more likely to cause injury.

· One rule of BB gun safety that is too often overlooked is that you should always use new ammo in your BB gun. It does not matter if it is expensive. Not doing so is dangerous and can degrade your gun more quickly.

Be sure to follow these rules of BB gun safety. Also, teach BB gun safety to anyone that you see who is not properly following these important rules!
