Bobcat Company's "D" series Toolcat has some good attributes, but in my experience its 4 wheel drive performance is not one of them. Special caution should be exercised when on a slope which is slick- the lack of traction and spinning wheels causes the machine to slide sideways on the downhill side creating a scary, and dangerous, turnover risk. Mud riding may be one of the most challenging kinds of riding on an ATV, and it sure can be a lot of fun. Even so, there is more to mud riding than going out there and giving it lots of gas. Now you might think that mud riding doesn't require a lot of finesse, but there is a certain technique you have to use if you don't want to constantly just get mired down in mud.
Some kinds of ATVs are better for getting through deep mud than others. Speed is required although you don't want to hit a mud hole too quickly. If the mud hole isn't too extended you may just be able to give it lots of gas and hope that your momentum will slide you through. Where the hole is deeper or longer you can try to keep one tire on solid ground so your ATV can get some traction. Or if the mud hole is narrow enough, you can even try to straddle the rut or at least keep one side out of the mud at all times. But if the rut is too deep your quad may become unbalanced and dump over.

Some riders like to stand on the pegs when going into a mud hole so they can respond more quickly to the uneven terrain. The danger in this is that if your quad gets stuck in the mud abruptly, you may get tossed over the handlebars.
Mud Riding With Your ATV
You will probably be more in control if you are balanced and comfortable. For some riders this might be standing, for others sitting or crouching just above the seat. Remember, you may hit tree roots or rocks that are hidden in that mud pit, or your quad may go from almost a complete standstill in the mud to suddenly getting traction while you have the throttle wide open. You want to be able to be in control in any situation.
An almost automatic reaction is to rev the motor once the quad starts to lose traction. When the mud is flying and you aren't getting traction, giving it more gas is usually not the best way to get going again. The more stuck you are the more this applies. Try twisting the throttle slowly to gradually add power so your wheels can get traction by gripping rather than by spinning faster. You can actually dig yourself in deeper if you spin your wheels too much, too quickly.
When you get into deep mud, try to shift your body to put extra weight where you are more likely to get some traction. For two wheel drive quads it works best to keep more weight on the back end as well as to shift your weight from side to side so at least one tire will be able to grab. As you might expect four wheel drive quads are a lot better in mud. Outfitting your ATV with tires with a deeper tread will also help when mud riding whether your quad has four wheel drive or just two wheel drive.

A quad bike (or ATV) is a motorcycle with four wheels. They became popular from the 1970's and have shown an increased demand since then. Quad bike riding has typically been done off road, offering the rider an exciting and thrilling experience which can be compared to motocross riding. A new type of bike has emerged on the market over recent years and this is the road legal quad, a bike which conforms to all safety requirements so that it can be used on public roads. Why would anyone want to use an ATV on the road when they could use a car or motorbike?
They offer a completely different riding experience which is fun, convenient and easy to learn. An ATV is very cheap to run. On average it costs only £12 to fill up the tank (unleaded) and this can last for many miles. Quad bikes can reach high speeds just like motorcycles. A 250cc to 300cc model will do around 65MPH, more with performance upgrades. A quad bike has fast acceleration, is easy to get through tight spaces and insurance is cheap, depending on your age. Most road bikes being produced today can transport two people although you should check with the manufacturer prior to purchasing for specifics.

Road Legal Quad Bike Advice
Road legal ATVs must be registered with the DVLA, taxed, insured and have an MOT just like a car must have. The quad bike must comply with strict construction and lighting requirement, have mirrors, and display registration plates on the front and the rear. By law no person under the age of seventeen is permitted to use a quad bike on public highways.
Many people ask can I convert my off road ATV into a fully road legal quad bike? Well in reality yes you can, however this can be a very costly affair. It is not unusual for it to cost in excess of £500. In order for a quad bike to be suitable for road usage, the vehicle must go through the ministry test for homologation and SVA certification. Once tested it must be retested every three years by a certified member of transport.
Using an ATV on the road will require the rider to hold a full UK car licence or a motorcycle licence prior 2001. Although a full UK driving licence is suitable to ride a road legal quad on British roads, the user may not have previous quad experience and this is not actually required. It is strongly advised prior to using a quad bike on the road that you practice in a quiet area with no people around such as a private piece of land or an empty car park (if you seek permission).
Please be aware that quad bikes are a dangerous piece of equipment and require a patient mannerism to learn the basics of riding one. It is important to be safe when riding a quad bike is this is a dangerous vehicle just like any other. There is no law which states the rider must wear a helmet although it is strongly recommended for safety reasons. There are mixed views on whether helmets should be worn, what do you think? Do you think it should be the law or down to a personal choice? Whatever your answer, the helmet is a useful safety article. A helmet approved to United Nations standard ECE 22.05 is suggested for use in the EU. Many people wear eye protection, boots and suitable clothing on their quad bikes. This is important as you only get one life, so protect it as much as you can!
To conclude, ATV's are becoming increasingly popular particularly road legal quads. If you are planning on riding your quad on the road it is advisable to purchase a road legal quad. If you already have an off road quad it is possible to convert it into a road legal vehicle but you need to make sure you do this correctly and legally and it can cost a considerable amount of money.

An increasingly popular modification RZR owners are doing is removing the plastic spacer that is on the crank shaft in the drive clutch assembly. This can increase your to RZR's top speed by as much as 10 mph.
The RZR's transmission is a pulley based constant velocity transmission (PVT) that consists of 3 major assemblies, the drive clutch, the driven clutch, and the drive belt. The drive clutch and the driven clutch both consist of two conical shaped pulley halves, called sheaves. The transmission operates by sensing centrifugal force that cause shift weights to push against rollers that push the movable sheave closer to the other sheave to pinch the drive belt. The closer the two sheaves are pushed together the further out the belt is pushed.

Removal of this spacer allows the two sheaves to come completely together where the belt would move out to the largest diameter on the sheaves. We have found this will increase your RZR's top speed anywhere from 5-10 mph. Some will say this is going against the original design of the transmission, but we speculate that it was designed without the spacer and was added on later as an easy way to limit the RZR's top speed for liability reasons. We have heard some arguments that removal of this spacer will decrease the life of your drive belts, but we have yet to have any issues. A proper break in period at lower speeds for the first 100 miles on a new RZR or after a new belt is installed is highly recommended to ensure a longer belt life.
Polaris RZR Performance - Gain 10 Mph For Free
Removal of the plastic limiting spacer is a simple process that requires a clutch compression tool that can be purchased through your local Polaris dealer (part # 8700220)
1. Remove driver and passenger seats.
2. Remove panel that is behind the seats to gain access to the outer clutch cover.
3. Remove the push rivets and fasteners holding the rear seat base and remove from vehicle.
4. With a screw driver loosen the clamp that holds the clutch outlet duct to the clutch cover and slide it off.
5. Remove outer clutch cover screws and remove clutch cover.
6. Remove drive clutch assembly by removing the clutch retaining bolt that threads into the crank shaft. (Facing the rear of the vehicle the drive clutch is the clutch assembly on the left) To remove the clutch retaining bolt you will need to secure the drive clutch assembly, aka the spider cage to keep it from spinning. A wooden hammer handle slipped into the spider cage works well for this. The clutch assembly is pressed onto the crank shaft and can be fairly easy to knock loose by tapping on it with a rubber hammer. (This is where the factory service manual would tell you to use a drive clutch puller, which you can order through your local dealer, part # PA-48595)
7. Once the drive clutch assembly is removed take it to a work bench where you can install a spring compression tool. Once it is clamped down you can loosen the 6 3/8" bolts that hold the clutch cover plate on. Once bolts are removed you can then loosen the spring compression tool unloading the clutch spring and then remove the cover plate. Before removing the cover plate use a sharpie to mark where it is aligned with the drive clutch assembly. They need to be bolted back together the same way because it is the way they were balanced from the factory.
8. After the cover plate has been removed you can slide the main clutch spring off and then remove the plastic spacer that sat inside it.
9. With the plastic spacer now removed slide the clutch spring back on then with the clutch spring tool compress the assembly back together until you can get the 3/8" bolts started. Tighten them the rest of the way torqued to 20 ft pounds.
10. Reinstall sheave assembly by sliding it back onto the crank shaft, then re install the clutch retaining bolt that threads into the crank shaft. Be sure you have the lock washer, thick washer and the plastic collar on the way they came off making sure the plastic collar centers in the clutch shaft as you tighten. This bolt needs to be torqued to 40 foot pounds.

Ported and polished, 38mm Keihin air striker carb, no airbox, wiseco piston, VForce 3 Carbon Fiber Reeds, Paul Turner full exhaust, lightened and balaced flywheel, Hinson Billet Proof Clutch, Works front shocks. And other odds and ends I don't feel like listing, lol. Oh frame color is lighting blue if anyone is wondering, it's chrome plating with powdercoating over it.

Well obviously our military has had much success with ATVs in both Gulf War I and II. It caught our enemy off guard early on in the war as our advancing ATVs ripped across the desert with kick-butt US Marines on them. They overtook the enemy so fast they did not know what was happening. Like Modern Day Road Warriors our US Military took the initiative and advantage and never gave the enemy a break. It was truly over that fast.
Thanks to the modern ATVs the US Military has gotten more aggressive and stronger too. Polaris Industries has sold the latest round of ATVs to the US Military and is delivering 50 more units in this next set of battlespace high-performance platforms. These latest units will be used in the rugged terrain of places like Afghanistan and they work very for that. They have also been deployed in South Western Asia. Youths need constant adventure and they also need a change of scenery once in a while. This is especially true when it comes to ATV tracks. Even adults will tire of the same ATV track after a while, much less a youth with a lot of enthusiasm, drive and need for adrenalin rush. There's nothing like going on different ATV tracks but as we all know, finding the right Youth ATV tracks for your kids can be a little trickier than you'll like.
Most Youth ATV tracks are constructed within or around lush forestation areas which provides families with alternate entertainment. Before you embark on an adventure to an ATV track, remember to remind your kids that they have to keep to the rules of the ATV track. The rules are often stricter than that of a normal ATV track and it's for a good reason too. One of the most important rules for most Youth ATV tracks is that kids should always stay on the track and resist the temptation to veer off course! This rule is in place for the safety purpose of the kids on the track. Veering off track on a personal adventure can put themselves or other people there in danger. On top of the going off the track could endanger the wildlife around the area too. Now, as we all know, construction of Youth ATV tracks is limited because many people feel that these tracks destroy nature. Destroying parts of the forest or woods around the Youth ATV track could very well spell TROUBLE.
It's easy for youths to get carried away when they're enjoying themselves, so, they need quite a bit of reminding. They need to realize that they are not the only ones using the Youth ATV track and they will need to be considerate at all times. There are many other families who are out there to have a good time as well. As parents, we should always show our kids how to practice common courtesy when on the track.
Like we said, it's easy for kids to get carried away when they're flying around the Youth ATV track - remind them that the ATV track is NOT a race track. In any case, kids should not be allowed to speed on the tracks because they may not be experienced enough to handle the speed or know what to do during an emergency. And besides, they may not be familiar with the ATV track yet, therefore, speeding through the Youth ATV track is not a good idea at all.
Give your kids the basics about using Youth ATV tracks before you bring them there - it's best to do it at home...and not wait until you're there. By the time they're there, they're so excited that everything you say would have flown past their heads, anyway.

Many people have a certain conception that all products that come from China are cheap junk put together by a one-armed peasant. Okay, maybe not the one-armed peasant thing, but the rest holds true in most Americans' minds. So you may be asking is it true...does China put out only crappy products? The answer is of course not.
Just because you have had cheap remote or something made of plastic with the logo "made in China" stamped on it, doesn't mean that all products that come out of China are junk. You would be surprised to find out how much of your own stuff was actually made in China for companies like GE, Panasonic, and others. Everything imaginable comes from China these days.
The big difference is what place in China made the product. If you are an ATV fanatic or just simply enjoy riding one from time to time, you may have come across a too good to be true deal that was an ATV for under $1000, sometimes way under. You see things like this all the time if you do a Google search for ATVs. People are selling ATVs for $399. How is this? To turn a reasonable profit on each unit after advertising, they must have only paid $50 for each unit. This is because they are buying the cheapest stuff possible from government owned factories. These factories hire unskilled labor and can really make a lot of mistakes.
Not all factories in China are like this. There are many that are privately owned and hire highly skilled laborers to assemble the products. These factories have very good quality control, and will fix things when problems arise. Not only that, but they are usually close in cost to the government owned factories. Sure they cost more, but for the extra quality that you receive, it is well worth it.
What are the benefits and setbacks of buying online vs. buying in a local dealership? Most name brand ATVs are sold in dealerships only. You hardly ever see Polaris, Honda, Yamaha, or other name brands being sold new online unless they are being sold by someone that simply bought one and is trying to sell it for one reason or another. They are not dealerships. This is because before the internet, the ATV companies set up dealer territories. Dealers could not sell to customers outside their territory, especially someone else's territory. The cost for a name brand ATV ranges anywhere from $3000 to $11000, not including the helmet and any accessories you may purchase. Chinese-made models cost between $400 and $3000. They are considerably cheaper and can be a great deal if you choose wisely.
It seems that the only websites that are selling online are ones that sell Chinese product. The product is always cheaper than any name brand and usually has something like free shipping included. This is a huge benefit to buying online. Not only that, but sales tax is only charged if you live in the same state that the shipping warehouse is located in. The sales tax savings may not last forever, because the government is watching a lot of tax dollars go out the window, but due to a couple of court cases that said charging tax on items that were sold from another state was against the interstate commerce ruling, it is still cheaper to buy things online. So enjoy if you are a buying or selling on the internet.
Be careful which product you buy online. If the seller does not offer a 90 day or longer warranty on the ATV then you may be about to get taken to the cleaners.
Most online dealers will ship the product about 80-90% assembled. This is to reduce shipping costs. If you don't understand how to assemble the remaining product then you will want to take it or have it shipped directly to a professional for assembly. Don't assume that because you know how to change your oil, you will be able to assemble an ATV out of the crate, unless you have very good instructions.
The repairs are just like any other piece of machinery. Most Chinese models are copied versions of name brand ATVs, so you can even buy Yamaha parts, for example, to repair your ATV.
So if you choose to buy an ATV online, pick a good dealer. They can provide you with the quality you are looking for.

So, all ATV freaks out there, listen up. it's time to mark the dates down on your calendar if you want to either try out or cheer the competitors on. The 2007 season will kick off with Twin Creeks on June 9, 2007 . Twin Creeks is located in Greenbrier Arkansas .
This if followed by Round Two of the ATVA 2007 Extreme Dirt Track ATVA Nationals at Taylorville , Illinois while Round Three will be held on July 7, 2007 in Danville , VA. If you stay around Ashtabula , OH , mark July 21-22, 2007 down on your calendar and make sure you make it for Round Four there. As the temperature drops, the heat turns up with Round Five on August 4, 2007 in Ava, MO and Elizabeth City, NC will host Round Sixe if ATVA 2007 Extreme Dirt Track Nationals on August 25, 2007.
